What is Modern Studies?

Modern studies is the study of current affairs. Here you will learn about what is happening in the world today and what is being done to resolve world issues. Through studying Modern Studies you will learn how to participate in a democracy, debate contentious issues and develop an awareness of rights and responsibilities.

What we offer:

S1 & S2 Combined social subjects: This course incorporates Geography, History and Modern Studies in a themed approach. The topics you will study include Witchcraft, Pirates and Mining.

S3 Modern Studies: This course will cover the role of the police in society, international issues such as terrorism and human rights and politics in the UK.

National 3/4/5 Modern Studies: This course will teach you about democracy: how to participate and how it works, A world power: This part will focus on political and social issues within a particular country. Social issues: This course will look at the causes of a social issue within the UK and government responses to that issue.

Higher Modern Studies: This course will teach you about democracy: how to participate and how it works, A world power: This part will focus on political and social issues within a particular country. Social issues: This course will look at the causes of a social issue within the UK and government responses to that issue.

National 3/4 People and Society: This course incorporates Geography, History and Modern Studies in a themed approach to teach you about concepts such as inequality, power and democracy.

National 5/ Higher Sociology: This course will teach you about research methods used by social scientists, sociological theories and social issues such as education and social mobility.

Higher Politics: This course will teach you about different political systems, ideologies and electoral systems.
